PUBLISHED REVIEWSIrene Carl stands tall as she portrays dozens of different young women coping with the daily stresses of big-city life in this series of short vignettes that hits more often than it misses. Set in New York City amid a recurring Starbucks backdrop, Carl deftly plays characters searching for the good life while dealing with the typical preoccupations of young urbanites.
- EYE WeeklyIrene Carl excels at portraying dozens of different types of women in this series of hit-and-miss vignettes that explore the daily stresses of the young urbanite wrestling with the constant desire to improve the quality of her life.
- EYE Weekly Irene Carl's performance as Denise in Problem Child is incredibly frustrating in its believability. As the hour-long play progressed, it got harder to fight the urge to shout some sense into Denise as she sank deeper into irrationality and closer to madness. Her struggle against everything in her world was highlighted in this story where she and her husband are fighting a social worker to get their child back. It's funny, but in an uncomfortable way where after the laugh there is emptiness and sadness. The writing and acting will have you right in the motel room with the characters.

One character's addiction to talk shows frames Problem Child's drama about a troubled couple (Cyrus Lane and Irene Carl) and their attempts to win back their child from a social worker (Sarah Kitz) pontificating about values (think US vice-president Dan Quayle). Sparks fly magnificently in the confrontations between Carl and Kitz... - Dave Morris, Eye WeeklyIt's always exciting to catch young talented actors before they head for the big time and the rep evening that I saw featured many folks whom I expect we'll be seeing and hearing from in due course. I was particularly impressed by the evening's opener, a Daniel MacIvor piece entitled This Is A Play in which the actors come on stage and speak their often very funny innermost thoughts instead of the ostensible dialogue of the play being performed. Play was directed with whipsmart pacing by Keith Bulla, and he also elicited very amusing performances by his cast of three, Irene Carl, Heather McHugh and Christopher Beckstrom.

The ambitious Chip Deffaa New York Theatre Invitational swings into high gear. One of the shows being featured here, a production of Daniel MacIvor's comedy, This Is A Play, was a crowd-pleaser when it was seen at last Spring's New School/Actors Studio Graduate repertory season. I caught a hilarious performance of it there and I'm happy to report that the same talented team, director Keith Bulla and actors Christopher Beckstrom, Heather McHugh and Irene Carl are returning.

Opening for Tales was the short, curtain-raiser Foursome , which kept the audience in stitches. It is funnier than Tales and was superbly acted by Douglas Martin, Andrew Rothkin, Keenan Shad and Irene Carl. Glory Sims Bowen's mad shop of horrors had all the earmarks of Monty Python and the Marx Brothers on a tear. Ensembles of this quality should be allowed to continue their performances at other venues.

Finally an unsuspecting woman enters and after entreating the men to stop fighting, has her limbs ripped from her body by the merchants competitive solicitations. Under Glory Sims Bowen's clear-eyed direction, the young cast offers an appropriately vertiginous introduction to Ionesco's methodical madness. - Charles McNulty, The Village Voice
